Bass Guitar Lesson 2 - The Natural Scale: CHAPTER 2 THE NATURAL SCALE A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,D,E,F,GA,B,C,D,E,F,G Scales are the key to writing music. The notes of a scale compliment each other, and can be used together to create chords, melodies, and harmonies, giving you a solid foundation to build or write your own songs, as well as learn your favorite pieces from other musicians. The material in the first half of this book will be taught using the natural scale, A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A. It is called the natural scale because it consists of all the natural notes and no accidentals, (sharps # or flats b). PART 1. MAJOR AND MINOR ROOT NOTES The two most common types of scales are the major and minor scales. A major scale has what some would describe as a bright or happy sound. A minor scale has what someone might describe as a mellow, soft or sad sound. The natural scale, ABCDEFG, consists of both the major and minor scales within its notes. To determine whether or not a scale is major or minor would depend on what we call the ‘root note’. The root note is the main note of a song/scale. For Example: When using the natural scale, if our root note is a C note, C D E F G A B C, our scale type is major. If our root note is an A note, A B C D E F G A, our scale type becomes minor. While learning the natural scale we will pay close attention to our minor and major root notes. Minor root notes will be referred to with a small case "m". So the note "A minor" will be referred to as Am. Major root notes will be referred to with a ^ symbol. So C major will be C^. Knowing the locations of your root notes will give you the ability to write a song in the major or minor key and/or change any song from major to minor in any scale position. This will also allow you to change keys during a song. There are 7 notes in the natural scale, Previous Lesson * Main Lesson Page * Next Lesson
