Bass Guitar Lesson 3 - Picking & Finger Picking:
Page 9 also introduces chapter 3, explaining finger and hand positioning. This covers using a pick, as well as using your picking hand fingers to play notes.

CHAPTER 3

FINGER AND HAND POSITIONING

Positioning of your right and left hand is very important when playing the bass guitar. Pay close attention to this chapter and get in the habit of keeping your fingers and hands in the proper positions at all times. This will allow you to achieve desirable results quicker.

Throughout this book we will refer to your index finger as your 1st finger, your middle finger as your 2nd finger, your ring finger as your 3rd finger, and your pinkie as your 4th finger.

PART 1. YOUR PICKING HAND

If using your fingers, pick with your middle and index fingers. Always alternate fingers; beginning with your middle finger then index.

If using a pick, hold it between your thumb and your index finger. The tip of the pick should be pointing in the direction of your index finger. When using a pick, always alternate your picking strokes. Down, up, down, up. Bend your wrist or your elbow when picking. Avoid any movement of your thumb or index finger. Your other three fingers should be rolled into your palm or stretched out and braced against the body of your bass guitar below the first string. (See next image for symbols)
