Page 16 CHANGING CHORDS Playing guitar is 80% finger and hand positioning. The easiest way to learn to change chords quickly is to know what fingers you are going to use to hold the notes of the chords, then map out the movement from chord to chord. In the example below the chord change is from E to A. The change is simple; move your fingers to the same frets one string lower. Finger Map: First finger moves from 3rd string/1st fret to 2nd string/1st fret. Second finger moves from 5th string/2nd fret to 4th string/2nd fret. Third finger moves from 4th string/2nd fret to 3rd string/2nd fret.
The next change is from Am to D. Finger Map: *First finger moves from 2nd string/1st fret to 1st string/2nd fret. Second finger moves from 4th string/2nd fret to 3rd string/2nd fret. Third finger moves from 3rd string/2nd fret to 2nd string/3rd fret.
*The D chord is commonly held with a different fingering than shown above. I prefer this fingering because it flows more naturally to the other chords commonly played with D. If you are used to the other fingering it is OK to continue using it.
