July and August, 2010

I have completed my third title for the Phrase By Phrase production company. This time we tackled AC/DC. Let me tell you, without a doubt, Angus and Malcolm Young’s guitar styles gave me the biggest challenge of my life. Throughout the next few weeks I will be posting a blog about the making of Phrase By Phrase AC/DC and my insight to transcribing and playing the guitar parts of each song. Song Lesson 03 of 10 - Playing Highway To Hell On Guitar

The rhythm guitar work in Highway To Hell is a little more intricate than previous lessons. The intro chords and main riff use the trademark AC/DC staccato rhythm, playing A, G and an inverted open D major chord, (click here to see sample video lesson). All intro chords avoid use of the high E string. When bridging to the chorus, the staccato rhythm switches to sustained chords. Here one guitar plays traditional open chords, while another layers inverted chords with lower bass notes. One example of these counter rhythms is when Angus plays a Dsus4 and Malcolm overlaps it playing a G chord, giving the song a very thick guitar sound.

After a D and Dsus4 build up, we have a lead guitar solo which has Angus introducing more double note patterns and bends than in his early lead work. Phrase 5 starts off the guitar solo with classic blues bends. A descending pentatonic scale run mixes in 1/4 and ½ step bends, palm mutes and artificial harmonics before bringing the listener down to the open 5th string A root note. Next is an ascending run cleverly giving the listener’s ears several resolving A root notes. Phrase 8 ends the solo with a reverse arpeggiated rake on an Am and slide up the neck to end on the 3rd string 14th fret A note with vibrato.

This builds the song up to an outro chorus that is layered with lead guitar fills full of single and double note bends, vibrato, pick scrapes and slides. The outro introduces a very memorable tapping section using the edge of the guitar pick to sound notes on the 1st string that ascends up the neck followed by the fretboard hand.

The tapping section is accompanied by the rhythm guitar rapidly strumming an open D chord. The D is further sustained by hammering fretted notes and even striking the body of the guitar. The rhythm switches to A, and after a vocal cue, the song ends with an abrupt strum and mute.

Song Lesson 02 of 10 - Playing Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap on Guitar

The basic structure to the song is very simple and should be easy enough for most beginners. The intro rhythm anchors on an E5 power chord, while pivoting between G5, A5 and D5. While one guitar plays open chords, the other plays the same chords, but fretted higher up the neck. At times, you'll hear one guitar play a single root note, while the other plays chords.

The verse applies the slide technique to fretted chords. Malcolm plays inverted power chords on strings 6-5-4, while Angus plays a traditional structure on higher strings. This contrast gives a full, distinct AC/DC tone that cannot be mimicked by a single guitar.

During the chorus, we see a continuation of counter rhythms. While one brother plays a fretted root note with a slight bend, the other will play an open chord on higher strings. In other areas, one will play a double note power chord, while the other guitar plays barred power chords using 4 strings.

The solo offers a handful of great techniques in phrases 6 through 10, starting off with double note bends and plenty of vibrato. There is a very tricky harmonic section based around the 9th fret, followed by a descending pentatonic run which employs hammer ons and pull offs before wrapping up with a bend and slide down the neck.

Up to this point, the solo is played over a B5 rhythm, which alternates between A5 then D5. When Malcolm's rhythm guitar switches back to Phrase 1, (the main rhythm), Angus wraps up the solo with a series of 1st string pull offs, which ascends nearly all the way up the neck before ending with an aggressive bend and vibrato combination that is held until the note no longer sustains.

Continuing with creative twists, the songs outro adds a slight change to the main rhythm, while a second guitar quickly strums barred major chords higher up the neck.

On GuitarSong Lesson 01 of 10 - T.N.T.

TNT starts off with a very memorable rhythm that should be very easy for most beginners. This is the first lesson on PXP AC/DC and therefore the easiest, (I tried to progress from easiest to most difficult). The basic rhythm in phrase 1.1 can be played throughout the whole song. However, to get it right, you’ll want to learn the subtle variations that brothers Angus and Malcolm Young splash throughout this rhythm. A simple note variation, alternate chord position and changes from staccato to sustained chords and notes, show their early development for playing counter passages against each other.
The solo is basic but fast. Beginners shouldn’t have a problem with the half speed, but working up to 3/4 and full speed might be a challenge. From it’s lowest note, the open 6th string E, to it’s highest, the 1st string 17th fret A, and all the notes that Angus plays in between; this early song begins a trend that will continue for decades... When Angus steps up to take a guitar solo, he is going to employ the entire fretboard with a ferocity unlike any other guitarist in Rock history.
The outro is raw, yet tightly orchestrated. Two rhythm guitars layer major chords, one paying strings 6 through 3, the other playing the same chord on strings 4 through 1. As this rhythm climbs in pitch, Angus ascends as well with unison bends, until he runs out of frets.
